In advance of the FIFA World Cup 2026™, Vancouver’s Science World’s iconic geodesic dome in Vancouver was reimagined as an oversized replica of the adidas Trionda, bringing the tournament’s official match ball to life on an unprecedented scale.

Project Overview

Commissioned by Science World and Destination Vancouver, the installation reimagined the landmark structure as “The Beautiful Dome,” creating a highly visible destination that celebrates Vancouver’s role as a host city while serving as a centerpiece for visitors, media coverage, and tournament-related activations.

To bring the vision to life, The Look Company delivered a complete end-to-end solution encompassing digital surveying, engineering, fabrication, and installation.

The Ask

The Look Company was approached to transform one of Canada’s most recognizable landmarks into a dimensionally accurate representation of the adidas Trionda match ball, while preserving the architectural integrity of Science World’s iconic dome.

The installation needed to:

  • Accurately replicate the official FIFA World Cup 2026™ match ball at architectural scale
  • Conform seamlessly to the dome’s complex double-curved geometry
  • Maintain visual continuity across the entire structure
  • Withstand outdoor environmental conditions throughout the installation period
  • Create a landmark experience capable of supporting tourism, broadcast, and fan engagement initiatives

The Challenge

Unlike traditional building wraps, Science World’s geodesic dome presented a unique engineering challenge.

The 40-metre-wide structure features complex curvature and geometric segmentation, making it impossible to simply scale and apply artwork directly to the surface. Each section required precise adaptation to ensure the final installation appeared as a single, cohesive match ball from multiple viewing angles.

Any misalignment between panels would disrupt the visual integrity of the design, requiring exceptional accuracy throughout surveying, engineering, fabrication, and installation.

The Solution

To achieve the required precision, The Look Company utilized its proprietary ScanAudit™ technology to create a centimeter-accurate digital twin of the structure.

Using a combination of drone-based and ground-level surveying, the team generated a comprehensive digital model of Science World’s dome. This model enabled designers and engineers to adapt the adidas Trionda artwork across 131 unique panel geometries while accounting for curvature, scale distortion, and alignment requirements before production began.

The result was a fully engineered fabrication package that ensured every panel would integrate seamlessly into the final installation.

Project Execution

The project involved the production and installation of:

  • 131 custom-shaped fabric panels
  • Approximately 65,000 square feet of architectural-grade coated fabric
  • 12,000 linear feet of reinforcement webbing
  • More than 15,000 grommets

Each panel was individually engineered and fabricated to fit its designated location on the dome.

Installation teams carefully positioned and tensioned every panel to create a continuous visual surface across the entire structure. Once completed, the individual components combined to form a dimensionally accurate recreation of the adidas Trionda match ball visible from surrounding streets, public spaces, aerial viewpoints, and broadcast footage.

The Results

The transformation established Vancouver’s Science World as a defining visual symbol of the city’s FIFA World Cup 2026™ celebrations.

The Beautiful Dome serves as:
